A complex, cutting-edge structure featuring engineered timber.
Colombo Chambers, located at 793-799 Colombo Street, is a replacement for earthquake-damaged buildings on the site.
The building footprint is approximately 300m² with a built-up floor area of 900m². The three-storey building is constructed of timber, with a composite timber concrete floor and suspended reinforced concrete ground floor slab supported on 16 metre deep CFA piles. The perimeter wall cladding consists of self-supported precast reinforced concrete wall panels which extend to the full building height, except for the north-west corner where there is a second storey balcony area.
The building is designed to resist seismic loads using Pres-Lam technology, which enables a controlled rocking mechanism that returns the building upright without significant structural damage, even after a major seismic event. Many of the post tensioning elements have been left exposed on the ground floor, providing an interesting feature and showcasing the high level of finishing evident throughout the building.
The clients also run the Cathedral Dental Centre, which occupies one floor of the building, and were delighted with the finished project, particularly with the compact but complex dental surgery fitout. We were pleased to return in late 2016 to complete a landscaped car park next to the building for them.
